Firefox Explained – Its History, Privacy, Advantages and Disadvantages

Firefox has been part of the internet for more than two decades, but it occupies a rather unusual position in today’s browser market.

It is neither owned by Microsoft nor built by Google. It is free, open-source software developed by Mozilla, an organisation structured around a nonprofit foundation and its commercial subsidiary.

Firefox is often recommended for privacy, customisation and independence. It also represents one of the few remaining alternatives to the browser technology underlying Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and many other browsers.

That does not automatically make Firefox the perfect choice for everybody. It collects some technical and usage information, occasionally encounters websites designed primarily for Chromium-based browsers, and relies heavily on commercial search partnerships to fund its development.

Firefox is therefore worth understanding properly—not as the automatic “good browser” in a battle against “bad browsers”, but as a distinctive option with genuine strengths and some important limitations.

What is Mozilla Firefox?

Mozilla Firefox is a free, open-source web browser available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

Like Chrome, Edge and Safari, Firefox allows you to:

  • open and manage websites
  • save bookmarks
  • store or generate passwords
  • use private browsing windows
  • install browser extensions
  • synchronise information between devices
  • view and edit PDF documents
  • translate web pages
  • manage cookies, permissions and tracking protection

The important difference is what sits behind it.

The desktop version of Firefox uses Mozilla’s own Gecko browser engine. A browser engine is the core technology responsible for interpreting website code and turning it into the pages, text, images, controls and applications you see on screen.

Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi are all based on Chromium and normally use its Blink engine. Firefox’s continued use of Gecko provides a genuinely separate implementation of web standards rather than another browser interface placed over Chromium. Mozilla’s MDN explanation of Gecko describes it as the layout engine developed by the Mozilla Project and used by Firefox.

That distinction matters beyond branding.

When several browsers depend on the same underlying technology, decisions made by the organisation controlling that technology can influence a very large part of the web. Firefox gives website developers, users and standards organisations another independent browser implementation against which websites and new technologies can be tested.

The story begins with Netscape

Firefox’s history begins before Firefox itself existed.

During the 1990s, Netscape Navigator was one of the most important early web browsers. It later faced intense competition from Microsoft Internet Explorer, which was supplied with Windows and became dominant on most personal computers.

In 1998, Netscape released the source code of its browser suite and created the Mozilla Project. The aim was to bring together developers from around the world to build open-source internet software.

The name Mozilla had existed inside Netscape for years. It was originally associated with the idea of a “Mosaic killer”, referring to the earlier Mosaic browser, although Mozilla eventually became the identity of the wider open-source project.

The project grew beyond one company. Volunteers and professional developers contributed code, tested software, translated interfaces, reported faults, created extensions and helped decide how the project should develop.

Mozilla 1.0 was released in 2002 as a complete internet suite containing a browser, email software and other tools. However, by that point Internet Explorer controlled well over 90% of the browser market.

A smaller, faster and more focused standalone browser was needed.

From Phoenix to Firebird to Firefox

The first version of the browser that would eventually become Firefox was released on 23 September 2002 under the name Phoenix.

The name represented a new browser rising from the remains of the earlier browser wars. Unfortunately, Phoenix Technologies already used the name in the computer industry, particularly in relation to BIOS software.

Mozilla renamed the browser Firebird in 2003.

That solved one naming problem and immediately created another. Firebird was already the name of an established open-source database project, whose community understandably objected to the browser adopting it.

In early 2004, Mozilla renamed the browser again—this time to Firefox.

Mozilla described “firefox” as another name for the red panda. More recent Mozilla accounts explain that the development team combined animal and natural-element names before discovering the red panda’s association with the term.

The famous logo looks more like a conventional orange fox wrapped around the world than a red panda, but after Phoenix and Firebird, Mozilla was probably relieved to find a name it could keep.

Firefox 1.0 arrives

Firefox 1.0 was officially released on 9 November 2004.

At the time, many people used Internet Explorer because it came with Windows rather than because they had actively compared browsers. Pop-ups were widespread, browser security was a growing concern, and meaningful competition had largely disappeared.

Firefox offered built-in pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, extensions, themes and a clearer alternative to Internet Explorer.

The launch was supported by its community rather than a conventional technology-company advertising campaign. Thousands of supporters contributed towards a two-page advertisement in The New York Times, with their names included in the published advert.

Firefox 1.0 was downloaded more than 100 million times during its first year. Its success helped restore meaningful competition to the browser market and placed greater pressure on Microsoft and other developers to improve security, standards support and browser features.

Firefox did not invent every feature associated with it. Other browsers had experimented with tabs, extensions and pop-up controls. Its achievement was bringing these ideas together in an accessible browser at a time when many users felt they had little practical choice.

Firefox Quantum and later development

Firefox continued evolving through regular releases, but it faced another major challenge after Google Chrome launched in 2008.

Chrome gained users rapidly and its Chromium code became the basis for an increasing number of browsers. Microsoft eventually replaced its original Edge technology with Chromium as well.

Mozilla responded with major work on performance and its browser engine.

Firefox 57, released in 2017 and marketed as Firefox Quantum, introduced significant changes to the interface, extension system and internal technology. Its new parallel CSS engine, known as Stylo or Quantum CSS, allowed parts of a page’s styling work to be processed simultaneously across multiple processor cores.

The move also required older Firefox extensions to be replaced with the newer WebExtensions system. This improved security and compatibility with modern browser-extension standards, but some long-standing add-ons stopped working.

Modern Firefox continues to receive frequent security, privacy and performance updates. It now includes features such as Total Cookie Protection, PDF editing, password management, synchronisation, local page translation, picture-in-picture video and built-in tracking protection.

Who actually owns Firefox?

Firefox is not owned by Google, Microsoft, Apple or an individual billionaire.

However, saying that it is simply “made by a nonprofit” misses an important part of the structure.

Mozilla describes itself as a hybrid organisation consisting of several related entities.

The Mozilla Foundation

The Mozilla Foundation was created in 2003 as an independent nonprofit organisation.

It oversees Mozilla’s governance and wider public-interest mission. That mission includes promoting an internet that remains open, accessible, secure and shaped for the benefit of its users.

The Foundation supports work involving internet policy, research, education, advocacy, open technology and responsible artificial intelligence.

It is also the parent and sole shareholder of the Mozilla Corporation.

The Mozilla Corporation

The Mozilla Corporation was established in 2005 as a taxable, wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation.

The Corporation employs many of the people who develop and operate Firefox. It can enter commercial agreements, generate revenue, employ product teams and compete in the technology market in ways that would be more difficult to manage directly inside a traditional nonprofit.

The Corporation is expected to operate in support of Mozilla’s wider principles rather than serving external shareholders.

This structure allows Mozilla to combine nonprofit governance with a commercial organisation capable of developing a major global software product. Mozilla itself describes this as a hybrid of nonprofit and market-based approaches.

The Mozilla Project and community

Mozilla is larger than either legal organisation.

The wider Mozilla Project includes employees, volunteers, translators, extension developers, security researchers, documentation contributors and open-source communities around the world.

Firefox was not invented by one person working alone. It developed from the work of many people involved with Netscape, the early Mozilla Project, the Firefox product teams and its worldwide contributor community.

Mozilla’s own history describes how community members added features, improved existing code and participated in the project’s management from its earliest years.

What about Thunderbird?

Thunderbird originated within Mozilla, but it is now developed through MZLA Technologies Corporation, another organisation within the broader Mozilla family.

Firefox remains the product most directly associated with the Mozilla Corporation.

How does Mozilla make money if Firefox is free?

Firefox is free to download and Mozilla does not charge users for ordinary browsing.

Much of Mozilla Corporation’s revenue has historically come from search-engine partnerships.

Search companies pay Mozilla royalties to be included among Firefox’s built-in search options or selected as the default search provider in particular markets. When users perform searches through those arrangements, Mozilla may receive revenue.

Mozilla states that the majority of the Corporation’s revenue comes from Firefox search partnerships and distribution agreements. Its reports have referenced agreements involving companies including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.

Mozilla also earns money through subscriptions, advertising and products such as Mozilla VPN, Firefox Relay and Monitor services.

This funding model has an obvious tension.

Firefox provides an important alternative to browsers controlled by large advertising and search companies, but Mozilla itself remains financially dependent on deals with some of those same companies.

That does not mean Google owns Firefox or can simply dictate its development. The Mozilla Foundation owns the Corporation. Nevertheless, Mozilla has acknowledged the need to diversify its income because relying heavily on search royalties creates financial risk.

The main advantages of Firefox

A genuinely independent browser engine

Firefox is not simply Chrome wearing a different jacket.

Its Gecko engine provides a separate implementation of web standards and helps prevent the modern web from becoming dependent on one browser-code family.

This matters even to people who never install Firefox. Competition between independent engines encourages standards to remain broadly compatible rather than being shaped around one company’s implementation.

Open-source development

Firefox’s source code is publicly available.

Independent developers and security researchers can examine how it works, report problems, suggest changes and build modified versions.

Open source does not guarantee that software contains no faults or questionable decisions. It does mean that the browser is not completely hidden inside a proprietary system that only its owner can inspect.

Strong built-in tracking protection

Firefox includes Enhanced Tracking Protection, which blocks many known third-party trackers, social-media trackers, fingerprinting scripts and cryptominers.

Total Cookie Protection separates cookies into individual website “jars”. This makes it more difficult for one company’s tracking cookie to follow someone between unrelated websites.

Firefox can also send a Global Privacy Control signal asking websites not to sell or share information associated with the browsing session. Mozilla correctly describes this as a signal rather than a blocker because websites may not always honour it.

Useful privacy controls without requiring extensions

Many Firefox privacy features work immediately after installation.

Users can choose between Standard, Strict and Custom tracking-protection settings. They can inspect blocked trackers, control individual website permissions, clear selected data and prevent websites from accessing the camera, microphone or location without approval.

Stricter protection can occasionally interfere with website functions, but the ability to adjust protection for one particular website is better than disabling it everywhere.

Multi-Account Containers

Firefox supports container extensions that separate website cookies and sessions.

A person can, for example, keep work accounts in one container, personal accounts in another and social-media services in a third. It is also possible to remain signed into two different accounts on the same service without constantly logging in and out.

Mozilla’s Facebook Container is designed specifically to make it harder for Meta services to connect activity performed elsewhere on the web with a Facebook identity.

Containers are one of Firefox’s most useful distinguishing features for people who manage several accounts or want clearer separation between different parts of their online lives.

Extensive customisation

Firefox allows more interface and behaviour customisation than many mainstream browsers.

Users can rearrange toolbars, change themes, choose search providers, alter privacy controls and install extensions from Mozilla’s add-on library.

Advanced users can make much deeper changes through Firefox’s configuration system, although changing unfamiliar settings without understanding them can create performance or compatibility problems.

Good cross-platform synchronisation

A Firefox account can synchronise bookmarks, passwords, open tabs, history and selected settings across supported devices.

Synchronisation is optional. Firefox can be used locally without creating an account.

Mozilla says synchronised information is encrypted, although the security of any synchronisation system still depends on protecting the account with a strong password and suitable authentication.

Built-in password management

Firefox includes a password manager capable of generating, saving and filling passwords.

This is generally safer than reusing one memorable password across many websites. However, customers with particularly sensitive or complex requirements may still prefer a dedicated password manager with more advanced organisational and sharing features.

Local translation

Firefox includes page translation that can operate using language models downloaded to the computer.

Mozilla states that supported page translation can take place locally, without sending the page content to a remote translation service. This is a useful distinction for users who prefer not to share everything they translate with another provider.

A practical alternative to Chrome and Edge

Moving to Firefox does not require abandoning ordinary web services.

Google Search, Gmail, Microsoft 365, YouTube, online banking and most other mainstream websites can be used normally. Bookmarks and saved information can usually be imported from another browser during setup.

Firefox can also be installed alongside Chrome or Edge. Testing another browser does not require deleting the existing one or swearing lifelong allegiance to a cartoon fox.

The disadvantages and limitations of Firefox

Occasional website compatibility problems

Most established websites work correctly in Firefox.

However, Chrome and Chromium-based browsers have such a large presence that some developers test their sites mainly—or only—against Chromium.

This can result in a website feature, payment page, video service or business application behaving incorrectly in Firefox even when the browser itself is functioning normally.

The correct solution is for websites to follow established web standards and test more than one browser. In practice, a user sometimes has to open a troublesome site in Edge or Chrome to complete an urgent task.

Performance varies by computer and workload

Claims that one browser is always faster or always uses less memory are rarely useful.

Performance depends on the computer, graphics hardware, number of open tabs, installed extensions and the particular websites being used.

Firefox may perform extremely well on one machine while a Chromium browser feels smoother on another. A single badly behaved extension or damaged profile can make any browser seem much worse than it really is.

For an older or struggling computer, changing browsers can help, but it should not be used to disguise failing storage, insufficient memory, overheating or unwanted background software.

It is not an anonymous browser

Firefox’s privacy protection reduces tracking. It does not conceal your identity from every website.

Websites can still see the public internet address used by your connection. Logging into an account tells that service which account is being used. Entering your name, email, payment details or delivery address identifies you regardless of the browser.

Private Browsing mainly limits information retained in the local browser after the private window closes. It does not make activity invisible to websites, employers, internet providers or account services.

Anyone needing stronger connection anonymity should understand the separate role of Tor Browser and the Tor network.

Mozilla still collects some data

Firefox is privacy-focused, but it is not a zero-data browser.

Mozilla’s current privacy notice explains that Firefox processes technical, settings and interaction information for functions such as updates, security, product improvement, search measurement and certain built-in services.

Some optional features require additional information, and third-party services integrated into Firefox can operate under their own privacy terms.

The important question is therefore not whether Firefox processes any data—it does—but how much is collected, why it is required, how it is controlled and whether the user can disable optional collection.

Mozilla provides settings for managing technical and interaction data, although these controls could be explained more prominently during installation.

Search partnerships create a dependency

Firefox’s survival is important for browser competition, but Mozilla’s dependence on search royalties is a genuine weakness in its business model.

A substantial change to a major search agreement could reduce the money available for Firefox development and Mozilla’s wider work.

Mozilla has been developing subscription products and other sources of income, but its own financial reporting still identifies search partnerships as central to its revenue.

Too much customisation can create problems

Firefox’s flexibility is an advantage until every setting has been changed, 23 extensions have been installed and nobody can remember which one replaced the search engine with something last seen in 2011.

Extensions can read or alter browser content according to the permissions they receive. A poorly maintained or malicious extension can create privacy, performance and security problems.

Install add-ons only from trusted sources, check the permissions requested and remove anything no longer needed.

Strict privacy settings can break useful features

Blocking more cookies and scripts can prevent trackers from working, but it can also disrupt legitimate website functions.

Embedded videos, login systems, shopping baskets, payment pages and customer portals may depend on third-party components.

Firefox allows protection to be adjusted for an individual site. This is normally preferable to permanently reducing protection across the entire browser.

Smaller support priority from some software providers

Some specialist business, education or government systems officially support only Chrome or Edge.

Firefox may still work, but the organisation’s support department may refuse to investigate a problem until it has been reproduced in one of its approved browsers.

For workplaces using a specific cloud platform, it is sensible to confirm browser requirements before making Firefox the only installed option.

Is Firefox more private than Chrome or Edge?

Firefox generally provides stronger tracking protection by default and offers more detailed privacy controls than many mainstream browsers.

Its ownership structure is also different. Chrome is developed by Google, whose wider business includes search and advertising. Edge is developed by Microsoft and is integrated heavily with Windows, Bing and Microsoft services.

Mozilla does not operate a comparable global advertising platform, and the Foundation’s ownership of the Corporation gives Firefox a different set of organisational incentives.

However, Firefox still includes search partnerships, recommendations and optional services, and it processes some technical and usage data.

The fair conclusion is not that Firefox provides perfect privacy. It is that Mozilla has made privacy, user control and an open web more central to Firefox’s design than most mass-market browser companies have.

Firefox compared with DuckDuckGo

Firefox is a complete general-purpose browser with extensive customisation, extensions and privacy controls.

DuckDuckGo offers both a private search engine and its own simplified privacy browser. Its browser aims to provide stronger defaults with fewer decisions, while Firefox offers more control and flexibility.

DuckDuckGo Search can also be selected as the default search engine inside Firefox. The two products are not mutually exclusive.

Firefox compared with Tor Browser

Tor Browser is actually based on Firefox technology, but it has been extensively modified for a very different purpose.

It routes browsing through the Tor network, restricts features that could distinguish one user from another and discourages ordinary customisation.

Firefox is designed for convenient everyday browsing. Tor Browser prioritises anonymity and resistance to tracking, accepting slower speeds and more website disruption in exchange.

Installing several ordinary Firefox extensions or attempting to make Firefox “the same as Tor” does not reproduce Tor Browser’s protections.

Is Firefox the right browser for you?

Firefox is particularly well suited to people who:

  • value browser choice and open-source software
  • want strong built-in tracking protection
  • prefer not to depend entirely on Google or Microsoft browser technology
  • use multiple accounts and would benefit from containers
  • enjoy customising their browser
  • want an everyday browser rather than an anonymity network
  • are prepared to keep it updated and occasionally use another browser for a difficult website

It may be less suitable as the only browser for someone who:

  • depends on a workplace system that officially requires Chrome or Edge
  • wants every website to behave exactly as it does in Chromium
  • expects private browsing to provide complete anonymity
  • prefers the simplest possible browser with almost no settings
  • intends to install large numbers of unfamiliar extensions

For many people, the most practical arrangement is to use Firefox as the main browser while keeping Edge or Chrome available for the occasional website that refuses to cooperate.

How Firefox relates to Computer Repair Norwich
